Kawakami Receives 21 Union and Trades Endorsements in Race for Mayor

LIHUE, HAWAII, July 7, 2018 – Derek Kawakami’s candidacy for Mayor of Kauai has seen an unprecedented endorsement by union labor.  Beginning with the endorsement of the United Public Workers (UPW) in October 2017, Derek Kawakami has steadily added union endorsements as the campaign progressed in 2018.  Yesterday, the Hawaii Building & Construction Trades Council added their support.

The Hawai’i Government Employees Association (HGEA) endorsed Kawakami in April 2018, stating: “We at HGEA are proud to put our organization’s name behind you and endorse you for Mayor of Kauai for the 2018 primary election.”   

With news of the latest endorsement Kawakami reflected, “On behalf of my family and our campaign team, I am honored and blessed to have such overwhelming support from organizations that represent working men and women in our community. We want to thank their vision and leadership that embraces our motto of honoring our past and building our future.”

Overall, 21 trades-and-crafts organizations and associations have formally endorsed Kawakami, including:
